On Thursday, March 28rd, the Jenks 8th grade band will be sponsoring and serving a meal to Tulsa's homeless with Night Light Tulsa.  Night Light Tulsa is an organization that feeds about 300-350 individuals under the bridge at the intersection of Maybelle and Brady in downtown Tusa.  They feed a meal every Thursday night throughout the year.   Click here to learn more about Night Light Tulsa.

For safety purposes, a parent MUST be present with their children at Night Light Tulsa.  Students may not attend if their parent cannot attend.

It costs us $1000 to sponsor a meal.  We will be raising money at February 24th's Solo/Ensemble Fundraiser outside the Jenks Reasors, and we will also be taking donations at our Pre-Contest Concert on Tuesday, March 12th.

Because we are sponsoring the meal, we are guaranteed 22 spots to serve the meal.  I have created a Sign-up for STUDENTS only. Parents, you may sign-up your 8th grade band student, but please don't sign yourself up.  If there are extra spots available, we will divvy them out to parents that evening.  Click HERE to sign-up for the food or drink line.

There will be other volunteer opportunities that evening as well, however they will also be shared with other volunteers from the community.  Night Light will have various stations to pass out clothing, hygiene products, dog food, books, etc.  You and your child are welcome to volunteer for those stations during the 6:30 meeting on that night.

Here is the basic itinerary for the evening:

  • Eat dinner before you go to this event!  :)
  • 6:00-6:15 PM:  Arrive at the bridge.  For safety, students should wear their 8th grade band t-shirt so that it is mostly exposed (over a hoodie or a jacket).  Be prepared for the weather-- Night Light will take place rain or shine.  Click here for a Google Maps pindrop to the bridge.  Many of the volunteers will park on Maybelle, south of the bridge.  If you know other families participating, you may want to consider carpooling.  Once you arrive, help unload the box truck with tables and chairs.  There will be many Night Light staff members (identified with the same tshirt) who will guide you where to place them.
  • 6:30 PM  We will all gather for the opening meeting with the Night Light staff.  They will go over the rules.  Click HERE for Night Light Volunteer Policies.  They will also take volunteers for the stations other than food.
  • 7:00-9:00 PM  Serve the meal and give out supplies.
  • 9:00 Help with clean-up.  This can take up to 30 minutes.  It is important that you walk back to your car in groups. There are male Night Light staff members who will also walk you back to your car-- you just need to ask.

This will be a great evening!
