The OSSAA District Solo and Ensemble competition is Saturday, February 15th at Jenks Middle School. SCHEDULE OF THE DAY (updated January 29th)
BEFORE CONTEST INFORMATION:
Students were allowed to sign up prior to Winter Break, and most solos/ensembles were passed out the two weeks after Winter Break. Here are the students who have entered the OSSAA solo/ensemble competition.
The cost for OSSAA solo/ensemble is as follows: Solo $12, Duet $10, Trio $7, Quartet or larger $5. Payments may be made through inTouch (through the parent PowerSchool), cash, or check made out to Jenks Band. Please have payment in by Wednesday, February 5th.
If brass/woodwind students are playing a solo, they will likely need an accompanist. Once you have the name of your accompanist, please forward the name to Julie Cryer ASAP. Here is a list of accompanists in the area. We suggest that students practice with the accompanist at least twice before performing at the event. It's important to note that parents are hiring accompanists for their skill and time. Jenks Band doesn't pay for accompanists.
Mrs. Cryer will have the band room open for ensemble practices during the following times for ensemble rehearsals:
It is encouraged that students get together at other times as well.
DAY OF CONTEST INFORMATION:
The schedule will be released one or two weeks before contest. Students should arrive approximately 30 minutes early to warm up properly. The warm-up area will be located in the cafeteria. Click here for a map and information provided by OSSAA. Please note that families need to use the cafeteria entrance for this competition.
Students should wear nice clothing as they will be performing for a judge. ("Nice clothing" means a dress or nice blouse/slacks for girls, slacks and nice shirt for boys. No athletic shoes, tshirts, or jeans!) Students may also wear their "contest attire" for this event (black button-down shirt, black slacks, black dress shoes).
Please note that all times on the schedule are approximate. If the room is running early, then students will need to perform a little early. If the room runs long, then students will need to be ready. I would suggest that students arrive approximately 30 minutes prior to their posted time. They should warm-up in the cafeteria and then proceed to their room. It is important that the warm-up is utilized correctly: warm-up NORMALLY. Do not overplay and wear out your embouchure before you perform. Represent yourself and your school well.
Students will need to provide the judge with the original music-- all measures should be numbered. If Mrs. Cryer or Mr. Silverman gave you the music, then you can find it in a box within your hallway marked "Jenks MS Originals". Take that to the judge, play, wait outside until the judge finishes making comments, then return that music to the box.
This will be a great day! I'm looking forward to watching you get rewarded for all of your hard work!
